He was born Lloyd Vernet Bridges, Jr on January 15, 1913 in Los Angeles, California. A member of the experimental Actors’ Lab group in the mid-1930s, Lloyd made his debut as an actor on Broadway with “Othello” in 1939. Two years later, he was already signed by Columbia and appeared in projects of varying quality, including “Here Comes Mr. Jordan” and “Talk of the Town”. The 1950s saw Lloyd Bridges perform in the cult sci-fi film, “Rocketship Z-M”. Throughout the decade Bridges was also ‘graylisted’ from the Hollywood A-list due to his earlier radicalism and suspected anti-American tendencies. This made him move into television, where he soon found great success in “Sea Hunt”. With the endless re-runs of the most popular program of the era, Bridges became both a star and a millionaire. Subsequent TV outings like “The Lloyd Bridges Show” failed to recoup Sea Hunt’s success. It was not until 1980’s “Airplane!” that Bridges found his audience again, this time with a new style – zany screwball comedy. In its sequel “Airplane II”, “Joe vs. the Volcano” and the two “Hot Shots” films, Bridges seemed to excel in goofy comic role throughout the 1980s. Off screen, Lloyd Bridges was a fervent environmentalist and campaigner on green issues, active in the American Oceans Campaign and Los Angeles’ “Heal the Bay” campaign, among many others. He died of natural causes on March 10, 1998.
