Maureen O’Hara, also known as Maureen FitzSimmons, was born in Ranelagh, Dublin, Ireland, and knew she wanted to be an actress from an early age. She studied acting at the Abbey Theatre and the Ena Mary Burke School of Drama and Elocution in Dublin. She began performing with the Rathmines Theatre Company when she was 10, in addition to going to regular school. She also attended business school and became quite adept at bookkeeping and typing. She was offered the opportunity to screen test for a production company in London, but found the entire experience to be pretty awful. However, her audition tape gained her notice, and she was subsequently signed to a seven-year contract with Mayflower Pictures. When WWII broke out, her contract was sold to RKO and she relocated to the United States. She went on to a successful career, and is widely recognized for her work in such films as “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, “How Green Was My Valley”, “The Black Swan”, “Miracle on 34th Street”, “The Quiet Man”, and “Spencer’s Mountain”, among many, many other projects. Maureen O’Hara died on October 24, 2015 at the age of 95.
