His world famous on-screen personality, known as “the Tramp”, is an iconic figure in the history of cinema. Charlie’s career spanned 75 years and prevailed through decades of radical change. Charlie’s work became especially important after his mother was committed to a mental asylum.

Charlie signed to the Fred Karno company when he was nineteen years old and made his first on-screen appearance in the 1914 film “Making a Living”. He then went on to work with several other production companies as he become a bigger global star. In 1919 he co-founded the United Artists Corporation with Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffith. This move gave Charlie complete control over every aspect of his career. His first major United Artists hit was 1921’s The Kid. The 1940s proved to be a political controversial time for Charlie. Chaplin’s satirical work during this era lessened his widespread popularity. He was a cinematic powerhouse during his career. He wrote, directed, produced, edited, acted in, and scored his own films. He directed a total of eleven feature films. He received an Honorary Academy Award in 1972 and was Knighted in 1975. Chaplin died on December 25, 1977 in his home in Corsier-sur-Vevey, Vaud, Switzerland of natural causes. His body was dug up for ransom in 1978 by two immigrants. It was later found in a field in Noville. He was married four separate times. His wives were Mildred Harris, Lita Grey, Paulette Goddard, and Oona O’Neill. Chaplin was recognized as one of TIME Magazine’s “100 Most Important People of the 20th Century” for his classic comedic appeal. The London Film Museum hosts a permanent exhibition in honor of Charlie Chaplin’s life and work.
